The prime minister said super-fast broadband will help to attract employers to the county.

David Cameron has said fibre optic broadband access will be a major boost for businesses in Cumbria.

In Prime Minister's Questions yesterday (September 7th 2011), the Conservative leader was asked by Carlisle MP John Stevenson what measures had been taken by the government to promote commercial growth on a local and national scale.

Commenting on the advances that have been made in Cumbria, Mr Cameron said the rollout of next-generation broadband services will have several advantages.

"The money we are investing for super-fast broadband will really help that county, particularly the most rural and far-flung parts, and will ensure that small businesses can benefit throughout the county," he remarked.

Mr Cameron also highlighted the Conservative-led coalition's enterprise zone plans as another method to promote economic growth.

The initiative will see 21 locations across England given discounts on business rates, simplified planning regulations and guaranteed fibre broadband access in a bid to attract employers.
