Fibre optic broadband campaign backed by Suffolk MPs

The Better Broadband for Suffolk group is keen to bring faster speeds to the area.

A campaign to bring fibre optic broadband to Suffolk has won the backing of local MPs.

The Better Broadband for Suffolk (BBS) initiative is being supported by MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich Dan Poulter, Suffolk South representative Tim Yeo and Therese Coffey, the Suffolk Coastal MP, reports the East Anglian Daily Times.

BBS chiefs are now ready to submit a bid for some of the £530 million Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) cash pot, created to encourage the rollout of super-fast networks across the UK.

Chris Soule, chairman of the Suffolk Federation of Small Businesses, said the body is not claiming to be more deserving than others when it comes to securing the funding.

"This is about Suffolk ... having a level playing field that will enable our economy to develop in the next decade and beyond," he explained.

The news comes after Mr Poulter pledged to work with everyone involved in the BDUK application to ensure that high-speed broadband is brought to Suffolk, the Diss Express reported.
