Fibre optic broadband will transform Ribble Valley, says MP

Friday, October 18th 2013 by Paul France
The MP for the Ribble Valley has praised a fibre broadband rollout project.

A project that has brought fibre optic broadband to rural areas of Lancashire has been praised by a local MP.

Nigel Evans, who represents his constituency in the Ribble Valley, claimed the benefits that will be felt not just socially, but also economically in the area cannot be underestimated.

The scheme which has brought the superfast service is a partnership between Ribble Valley Borough Council and service provider BT.

Mr Evans travelled to Westminster to discuss the project with BT's new boss Gavin Patterson, with the two planning how best ensure rural areas are included in rollouts.

Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, he said: "I told him of the importance of fibre optic broadband to the Ribble Valley which, given the constituency’s rural nature, will mean that families and businesses will benefit hugely from this infrastructure upgrade.”

The scheme will bring a next-generation connection to an estimated 355 businesses by the end of 2015. It has come as part of a wider nationwide initiative that has seen a £2.5 billion investment on the part of the government and BT.
