Fibrewave broadband deployment scheme put up for Ofcom consultation

Tuesday, August 14th 2012 by Editorial
Fibrewave's plans to bring superfast broadband to Cambridgeshire are to be discussed via a new Ofcom consultation.

A new consultation has been launched by Ofcom on whether to grant internet service provider (ISP) Fibrewave permission to install a superfast fibre broadband network in Cambridgeshire.

The telecoms regulator is seeking opinions on whether Fibrewave should be authorised to carry out its own street works to implement a fibre optic network, which will target rural areas with limited connectivity.

Fibrewave's plans will initially benefit the villages of Earith, Bluntisham and Colne, with 4,500 local residents to gain access to download speeds of 40 Mbps and upload speeds of 10 Mbps.

Connections will be routed through five street cabinets that Fibrewave wishes to install during the summer of 2012, primarily targeting areas that are underserved by existing providers.

The Ofcom consultation will run until September 10th 2012, with the regulator to issue a final decision shortly afterwards.

Fibrewave was founded by Pat and Jim Henry alongside Tim Warren, three East Anglia locals who are hoping to deliver a fibre broadband service that is specifically tailored to the needs of the community.
