Fibrewave to roll out FTTH broadband to Cambridgeshire villages

Three Cambridgeshire villages are set to gain access to FTTH broadband next year.

Fibrewave has announced it will begin rolling out ultra-fast fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband early next year after being granted code powers by Ofcom.

The internet service provider revealed in February it was planning to deploy a fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) network offering residents and businesses in the villages of Bluntisham, Colne and Earith access to downstream speeds of 40Mbps.

However, these plans have now been upgraded, with Fibrewave describing FTTH technology as a "true long-term investment in the villages".

The company was unable to unveil the plans until this week, as there was an unanticipated delay in getting hold of the necessary approval from Ofcom.

Once the fibre optic broadband network goes live, customers will be able to choose from speeds of between 25 and 100Mbps.

Fibrewave was originally planning to deploy FTTC infrastructure in the three villages this summer.

The rollout, which was expected to benefit around 4,500 rural residents, was set to involve the installation of five street cabinets containing broadband server equipment.
