The service offers speeds that are 100 times greater than the UK average.

A new residential fibre optic broadband service offering symmetrical speeds of 1Gbps has been launched by Hyperoptic.

The package, described by the provider as the first of its kind in the UK, offers speeds that are 140 times faster than the national average.

Large-scale commercial and residential properties in London are the first to receive access to the next-generation broadband service, with the rollout set to extend to additional cities across the country in 2012.

Hyperoptic believes its new product will offer benefits to gamers, families with multiple internet users and people who are keen to work from home.

Managing director Dana Tobak said: "Going live today [September 14th 2011], we really feel we are at the start of an exciting journey in terms of taking broadband to the next level in the UK."

She added the launch shows that next-generation access can be delivered at a "competitive and affordable rate".

As well as its top-tier 1Gbps package, Hyperoptic offers 20Mbps 'Hyper-lite' and 100Mbps 'Hyper-active' fibre broadband services.
