Some London residents can now access gigabit broadband speeds from Hyperoptic.

Hyperoptic has announced its 1Gbps fibre optic broadband service has gone live at a riverside residential development in Wandsworth, London.

Tenants at Prices Court, a 133-flat building in the capital, can now take advantage of the ultra-fast fibre-to-the-home product, described by Hyperoptic as the first of its kind in the UK.

As well as deploying the infrastructure in Wandsworth, the internet service provider (ISP) has begun rollouts in several other parts of London, including Battersea, Shepherds Bush and the Docklands.

It is also planning to extend the technology to other UK cities in 2012.

According to the ISP, customers who sign up for one of its fibre optic broadband packages will receive throughput at 95 per cent of the connection's headline capability.

Chairman of Hyperoptic Boris Ivanovic said: "The UK has a long way to go before we begin to fully realise the benefits and change super-fast broadband can bring to our lives. Today we're at the start of that journey."
