Lily Systems says fibre broadband removes distance problems

Connectivity problems caused by the distance of a property from the nearest exchange are diminished by fibre broadband, Lily Systems has said.

Fibre optic broadband services potentially eradicate the issue of slow connections caused by distance from the nearest telephone exchange, according to a Leicestershire IT firm.

Becky Jolliffe, sales and marketing administrator at Lily Systems in Harborough, told the Harborough Mail that fibre optic cables are capable of carrying much more information than copper broadband infrastructure.

"If your home is connected to the exchange with fibre optic cable, it should not matter how far away from the exchange you live," she explained.

EFM cables also provide "very good connection speeds", Ms Jolliffe said, but they are still affected by the distance from the exchange to the property.

Exchanges are generally located in large towns and cities, although small exchange cabinets have been deployed to villages and individual streets.

Ms Jolliffe's comments come shortly after BT announced a major fibre optic broadband upgrade for Leicestershire, with another 22,500 homes and businesses across the county set to be upgraded by spring 2013.
