MacAce targets fibre broadband service at Apple iOS users

The LightSpeed service offers top download speeds of 40Mbps.

A new fibre optic broadband service has been launched by MacAce, a telecoms firm that specialises in internet products for machines running Apple's iOS platform.

According to the company, the range of broadband packages - known as LightSpeed - will utilise BT's fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) infrastructure to deliver speeds of up to 40Mbps to subscribers.

BT has previously revealed the maximum download capabilities of its FTTC offering will be roughly doubled during 2012.

Gary Hall, chief executive of MacAce, claimed that while the headline speed is not significantly higher than its existing ADSL2+ service, end users will definitely notice the difference.

Although ADSL2+ offers rates of up to 24Mbps, this figure is dictated by the length and quality of the copper line and typically peaks at around 17Mbps.

"With LightSpeed fibre broadband, customers get much nearer the advertised rate," Mr Hall explained. "This is because there's only a few hundred meters - at most - of the slower copper cabling."
