Schools are being given the chance to sign up for free super-fast broadband in a new NextGenUs pilot scheme.

Fibre optic broadband provider NextGenUs has announced a "radical offer" that gives schools the chance to sign up for free future-proof internet connectivity.

The telecoms firm is offering super-fast broadband with symmetrical speeds to educational institutions on the basis that they help to deliver the service to residents and businesses in the local area.

Schools receive a discount on their subscription dependent on the proportion of the community that opts to take advantage of fibre optic broadband.

Pilot schemes for schools interested in taking part in the initiative are set to be conducted in Cumbria, Lancashire, Leicestershire and Yorkshire.

"Where fibre is present already, the proven NextGenUs approach is to provide a minimum internet feed of 100Mbps symmetric and the preferred feed speed is gigabit," the company explained.

NextGenUs has previously rolled out fibre optic broadband in areas such as Ashby de la Launde in Lincolnshire, where connection speeds rose from less than 0.5Mbps to as much as 100Mbps.
