Opposition to BT's Midhurst fibre broadband rollout

Monday, July 23rd 2012 by Editorial
A Midhurst resident has complained about the planned location of a BT broadband cabinet.

Parts of Midhurst in West Sussex could miss out on access to fibre optic broadband from BT after plans to install a new street cabinet met with criticism.

Midhurst Town Council clerk Joan Hursthouse told a meeting that a resident had contacted her to express concern about the location of the cabinet, reports the Midhurst and Petworth Observer.

Members of the local authority's planning committee recently raised no objections to the installation of the dark green cabinets in other parts of the town.

BT had originally hoped to complete its fibre optic broadband deployment in Midhurst by the end of June.

This is the latest time in recent weeks that BT has faced opposition to its cabinet installations.

In May, Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council blocked 96 of 108 planned installations on the grounds that the cabinets would ruin the area's "historic streetscape".

BT has since halted its plans to roll out fibre optic broadband in the borough.
