Rural villages in Wales benefit from next generation broadband

Two rural locations in Wales will be able to access the internet more quickly after the rollout of new technology.

Two rural villages in Wales are now able to benefit from next generation broadband after a service provider braved bad weather to install the infrastructure.

Llangedwyn and Llanfechain, both in the Powys region of Wales, were targeted by eXwavia as part of its drive to link up 27,000 households and 3,000 businesses to its services by the end of this month, ISP Review reports.

The exact method of delivery has not been revealed, but since businesses can achieve speeds of up to 100Mbps, it is assumed the technology is fibre broadband.

However, home-based customers will have maximum speeds of 16Mbps.

Engineers were forced to battle terrible weather conditions to ensure the installation deadline was met, with some forced to carry their equipment up side roads after heavy snowfall.

"Residents now have next generation broadband, years before government targets," said eXwavia.

Part of the funding for the rollout was provided by the Welsh government's Broadband Support Scheme.

This service provider is not the only one keen to see government targets for faster broadband beaten - Zen Internet recently said it thinks the uptake of fibre optic broadband services in the UK is too slow, even though it offers much faster speeds than traditional copper connections.
