Spectrum fibre broadband network passes 700 homes

Friday, June 28th 2013 by Paul France
More than 700 south Wales homes are now served by Spectrum's fibre broadband network.

Spectrum Internet has reached a milestone in its fibre optic broadband rollout, with its own network now passing more than 700 homes in south Wales.

The company has been deploying super-fast broadband infrastructure to the area served by the Gower exchange, as well as rural communities near Swansea and two villages in Monmouthshire.

Rural residents have been approaching Spectrum to provide them with a solution to their connectivity woes, with many previously receiving poor or non-existent broadband.

Thanks to the Welsh government's Broadband Support Scheme, anyone stuck with sub-2Mbps internet access can apply for up to £1,000 of funding to help them improve their connection.

Households receiving Spectrum's fibre broadband service are enjoying top speeds of 80Mbps - around 40 times faster than before the upgrades were carried out.

Giles Phelps, Managing Director of Spectrum Internet, said: "There is high demand and take-up for better broadband in rural areas, although the number of households may be lower."
