Fibre optic broadband is now available to more Northamptonshire properties through a public-private partnership.

The Superfast Northamptonshire fibre optic broadband rollout is ahead of schedule, with the first set of 14 street cabinets set to go live today (February 3rd 2014).

Parts of Towcester and Weedon are the first to benefit from the scheme, which is being funded by BT, the county council and government agency Broadband Delivery UK.

More than 4,175 homes and businesses will be able to access superfast connectivity for the first time as a result of the project.

Communications Minister Ed Vaizey attended an event in Towcester this morning to officially launch the new cabinets, with several more due to be activated in the coming weeks.

Furthermore, Councillor Andre Gonzalez de Savage, a Board Member at the Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership, said the county's interactive broadband map has been updated to display "many more" areas where pre-planning and surveying work are getting started.

"This will involve BT subcontractors surveying the sites for the next phase of deployment in Northamptonshire," he explained.
