An additional 3,000 premises in Northamptonshire are to gain access to fibre broadband.

The rollout of fibre broadband to residents and businesses based in Northamptonshire is to be extended, with plans for the high-speed technology to reach an additional 3,000 premises by the summer of next year - news that has been welcomed enthusiastically by local people.

Northamptonshire County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Infrastructure, Economic Growth and Public Protection Andre Gonzalez de Savage hailed the announcement of the extension as "excellent news", before adding: "Having fast broadband speeds is becoming increasingly important for households and essential for businesses that want to compete in the global economy."

Overall, around £11.5 million has been invested in delivering better broadband to properties in Northamptonshire by network provider BT, the local council and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, with 56,000 homes and businesses set to be connected to fibre by the end of 2015.

The communities set to benefit from this latest announcement are Brackley, Yarwell and Woodford Halse - where superfast broadband will arrive for the first time - while current rollouts in Kettering, Kingsthorpe, Roade, Rushton, Desborough, Northampton town centre, Daventry and Towcester will be extended further.
