TalkTalk demands effective fibre broadband competition

David Goldie of TalkTalk warned BT could gain a dominant position in the fibre broadband market.

The UK's fibre optic broadband market needs "effective and vigorous" competition, TalkTalk commercial boss David Goldie has said.

Writing for the internet service provider's (ISP's) official blog, Mr Goldie warned that market forces are under threat from BT, which is looking to "hamper and handicap" its rivals.

He argued it is in the telecoms giant's interests to make life difficult for other ISPs to purchase wholesale access to its broadband infrastructure.

BT is also keen to stand in the way of Fujitsu, which wants to rent access to the company's ducts and poles for the deployment of its own fibre broadband network, Mr Goldie claimed.

"If there is to be effective and vigorous competition in super-fast broadband services as we have in the current broadband market then this needs to be addressed urgently," the TalkTalk director declared.

Speaking to the Observer earlier this month, Mr Goldie added that BT's motivation "at all times" is to find a way to recapture the monopoly it once held over the UK telecoms market.
