The cable company will deploy its infrastructure to an additional 100,000 homes by the end of the year.

Virgin Media has stated it is rolling out its fibre optic broadband network to thousands more properties every month.

Head of broadband John James said the company is always on the lookout for opportunities to bring "the fastest broadband and best in home entertainment" to residents in more parts of the UK.

His comments come as Virgin Media announced it is set to pass an extra 100,000 homes by the end of the year as part of its latest deployment.

Southampton is one of the locations that will benefit from the improvement work, with the firm in line to almost double its presence in the city when the project is finished.

"We're ensuring more people can experience the compelling advantages that a super-fast connection can bring," Mr James remarked.

Last month, Virgin Media highlighted the success of its up to 1.5Gbps fibre broadband trial in London's Old Street area, known as Silicon Roundabout.

The service is up to 240 times faster than the UK's average download speed.
