The service will be particularly useful when multiple devices are connected to the web.

Virgin Media has claimed its 100Mbps fibre optic broadband service will make a difference in households that often have more than one person online simultaneously.

The cable broadband giant, which today (January 25th 2011) announced this "ultra-fast" product has been made available to 150,000 more homes, said its research has shown the proposition will "come into its own" when multiple devices are connected to the web.

An "explosion" in use of gadgets such as connected TVs, smartphones, computers and games consoles has resulted in the company experiencing a 215 per cent increase in data consumption on its network in the past three years.

"Faster broadband speeds provide users with the greater bandwidth to ensure a hassle-free and enjoyable way to access entertainment and everyday services, particularly in shared households," Virgin Media explained.

The internet service provider's 100Mbps fibre broadband offering hit the market in December and was initially launched in parts of Yorkshire, London and the south-east.

Virgin is expecting to complete its rollout of the technology by mid-2012.
