The launch is a "significant milestone", Virgin Media's director of broadband has said.

Virgin Media has announced the launch of its up to 100Mbps fibre optic broadband service in Cambridge.

According to Cambridge First, residents in the city can now sign up for the ultra-fast broadband product, which offers speeds that are almost 16 times above the UK average.

The increased bandwidth offered by the package enables more than one person to connect to the web simultaneously from a variety of enabled devices, including games consoles, smartphones and tablets.

Executive director of broadband at Virgin Media Jon James claimed residents will be "blown away" by what can be achieved using an up to 100Mbps fibre broadband connection.

"The launch of our 100Mb service in Cambridge is a significant milestone in the UK's broadband evolution and a vivid illustration of the power of our next-generation network," he added.

Last month, Mr James claimed Virgin Media offers the only broadband infrastructure in the country that is ready to cope with the forthcoming "explosion" in data usage that will be seen over the coming years.
