Almost half a million customers signed up for speeds of 30Mbps and above with Virgin Media in the second quarter.

Virgin Media has reported another increase in the number of customers signed up to its super-fast fibre optic broadband services.

During the three months to the end of June, the cable company added 459,800 more subscribers to its broadband packages with speeds of 30Mbps and above, taking total customer numbers to 1.3 million.

Of these, around half are on the higher-tier 50Mbps and 100Mbps connections, while around 41 per cent of new subscribers opted for speeds of 60Mbps or higher in the second quarter.

Virgin Media also revealed its programme to double the speeds of more than four million customers is well underway, with approximately 765,000 households upgraded.

Since February, 22 per cent of the company's network has been enhanced to deliver the new, faster downstream rates.

In March, Virgin Media announced the completion of its 100Mbps fibre optic broadband rollout, with the upgraded network now serving 13 million homes across the country.
