Virgin Media sees surge in super-fast fibre broadband customers

Almost 850,000 households are signed up to super-fast broadband services from Virgin Media.

Virgin Media's super-fast fibre optic broadband customer base increased by almost 150,000 during the first three months of 2012.

Around half of all new Virgin Media broadband subscribers opted to sign up for speeds of 30Mbps or more in the first quarter, taking the total number of households on these deals to almost 850,000.

Of these, more than 250,000 are subscribed to the cable company's higher tier packages of 50Mbps, 60Mbps and 100Mbps.

As well as boosting its super-fast broadband customer numbers, the three months to March 31st saw Virgin Media complete the rollout of its 100Mbps service across its entire network ahead of schedule.

Some 13 million homes are now able to access the fibre optic broadband product, which Virgin describes as the UK's fastest widely-available fixed-line service.

"Virgin Media has been leading the evolution of digital entertainment in the UK and with services such as TiVo and 100Mb, we've catalysed a massive growth in the consumption of digital entertainment," said Andrew Barron, the company's chief operating officer.
