The technology will be made available to around 20,000 local premises.

BT Infinity fibre optic broadband has been rolled out to the first properties in Rugby, Warwickshire.

The telecoms giant is expecting to finish the improvement work in the coming weeks, by which time approximately 20,000 homes and businesses in the town will have access to the technology.

Download speeds of up to 40Mbps are currently offered by the service, but BT has said future exchanging and upgrading of equipment could see this headline figure boosted to 60Mbps.

The company expects the "great majority" of premises in Rugby will be able to receive BT Infinity broadband, but admitted commercial and technical reasons meant it will not initially be available in some areas.

"This is another exciting development in the region's fast-moving broadband story," remarked John Dovey, BT's director for the West Midlands.

Residents in 13 London communities, including Bexleyheath, Uxbridge and Stratford, are also now able to receive fibre broadband thanks to recent work by the company.
