Fibre broadband boost for the Roseland Peninsula

Underwater cables have been laid in the River Fal to bring fibre broadband to the Roseland Peninsula.

The £132 million Superfast Cornwall fibre broadband connectivity project has announced it will be extending its delivery of the high-speed technology to the Roseland Peninsula.

Due to the relatively remote position of the area, underwater cables will have to be laid to transport fibre connections to those based in Roseland.

This has proved a challenging task for BT's Openreach Engineers as the River Fal's bed shelves steeply, it is an important shipping path and workers have had to ensure they are protecting the surrounding environment.

A network has already been built to serve 90 per cent of homes and businesses in Cornwall as part of the rollout project, with this next development set to connect an additional 500 Roseland premises to the superfast service. This will take the current coverage in the area from 78 per cent to an impressive 95 per cent.

Superfast Cornwall's Programme Director for the Cornwall Development Company - which is the economic development arm of Cornwall Council - Nigel Ashcroft commented: "The work being undertaken across the River Fal and on the Roseland Peninsula ... means that Roseland will be among the best connected rural areas in the UK."
