Fibrestream praises Sky for Hull fibre broadband ad move

Sky has decided to allow NextGenUs to promote its broadband services in Hull shopping centres.

Fibrestream has welcomed Sky's decision to allow fibre optic broadband provider NextGenUs to advertise its services in Hull shopping centres.

The company had accused Sky of "blocking broadband choice" with its national exclusive deal to set up promotional broadband stands in malls across the UK.

It was particularly frustrated with the issue in Hull, where the satellite broadcaster does not actually offer any broadband packages and therefore only has TV services to advertise to local residents.

However, Sky has since opted to give NextGenUs the green light to market its super-fast products in the East Yorkshire city's shopping precincts.

Announcing the news on its official blog, Fibrestream explained Hull is "the only sizeable city in the UK where Sky cannot provide any fixed line ADSL broadband".

Sky acknowledged earlier this month that it had "no need" to retain the exclusivity agreement on broadband products in Hull and vowed to discuss the matter with mall owners "to see what compromise might be reached".
