The technology will give users access to download speeds of up to 40Mbps.

TalkTalk has announced its first ever fibre optic broadband product will be available from next month.

The internet service provider (ISP) revealed it will launch the technology in May 2011, having confirmed plans to move into the fibre broadband market earlier this year.

Consumers who sign up for the package will receive speeds of up to 40Mbps, which the company claims will allow users to download movies and stream high-definition content from the BBC iPlayer, YouTube and other similar sites with no buffering.

It also enables more than one person to access the web at the same time without experiencing any slowdown from the broadband connection, TalkTalk stated.

Earlier this year, the ISP outlined plans to trial fibre to the home as part of its super-fast broadband rollout that takes advantage of BT Openzone infrastructure.

The pilot scheme, carried out in partnership with Sky, will take place at a small-scale network in north-west London that covers around 3,600 households.
