The company's 100Mbps broadband service has gone live in Epsom.

Virgin Media has chosen Epsom as the first town in Surrey to get access to its up to 100Mbps fibre optic broadband infrastructure.

The community is one of 35 locations in the UK that can connect to the "ultra-fast" service, which is now available to more than one million homes.

Jon James, the cable giant's executive director of broadband, said residents will be "blown away" by the capabilities offered by a 100Mbps fibre connection, reports the Epsom Guardian.

"The launch of the service in Epsom is a significant milestone in the UK's broadband evolution and a vivid illustration of the power of our next generation network," he added.

According to Virgin Media, the product enables users to download a high-definition movie in approximately seven minutes and a whole album in less than five seconds.

The company is planning to roll out 100Mbps speeds across its entire network, which currently covers around 13 million homes throughout the UK.
