Virgin Media signs up 4m fibre broadband customers

The cable company has announced an increase in subscriptions.

Virgin Media has reported an increase in the number of customers subscribed to its fibre optic broadband proposition.

The cable company revealed more than four million households across the UK are now signed up to receive one of these products, which include packages offering up to ten Mbps, 30Mbps, 50Mbps and 100Mbps download speeds.

This result means Virgin is a long way ahead of its main rival, BT, in terms of fibre broadband subscribers.

In BT's trading statement for the three months to September 30th 2010, the telecoms giant said it had attracted approximately 38,000 people to take out one of its BT Infinity fibre-to-the-cabinet offers.

However, the company insisted this figure was "increasing rapidly", with more than 4,000 consumers per week registering for the service.

Further details of Virgin Media's broadband customer numbers will be announced when the internet service provider publishes its financial results for the fourth quarter of last year on February 17th.
